Set the Record Straight

Last updated 4 November 2026 · applies to the demo and the full game

In short

  • The game collects no personal data. It has no accounts, analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or ads, and it connects to nothing while you play.
  • Your saves stay on your computer. If you play through Steam, Steam can keep a copy in Steam Cloud.
  • We only receive what you choose to send us: a bug report, a survey answer or a tester sign-up.

What the game keeps on your computer

The game saves your settings and your progress in each case on your own computer: what you have filed, the notes you write in the notebook, your recent searches and when you last played. The desktop version also remembers the size and position of its window.

On a Mac these files are in ~/Library/Application Support/set-the-record-straight/; on Windows they are in the game's data folder in your user account. None of this is sent anywhere by the game. New Game in the menu clears your progress, and uninstalling the game and deleting that folder removes everything.

Steam

The game is sold and delivered through Steam, which is run by Valve. When you play with the Steam client running and Steam Cloud switched on, Steam stores a copy of your save in your Steam account, so you can continue on another computer. That copy holds your progress, notes and recent searches, but not your settings. In the full game, Steam also records the achievements you unlock.

Valve handles this, along with your Steam account, purchases and playtime, under the Valve Privacy Policy. We can't see your save. You can switch Steam Cloud off for the game in its Properties in Steam.

What you can choose to send us

Bug reports

Report a bug in the main menu opens your own email app with a message to the game's support address. The game fills in its version, your operating system and its version, and your processor type, so we can reproduce the problem. Nothing is sent unless you send it.

If you send it, we receive your email address, the name your email app attaches and what you write. We use them only to fix the problem and answer you, and we delete the report once the problem is fixed.

The demo survey

3-minute demo survey, in the menu and at the end of the demo, opens a Google Form in your browser. It asks for no name or email and needs no sign-in, so your answers are anonymous unless you type personal details into a free-text answer. Please don't. Google stores the answers for us. We use them to improve the game, and we delete them when the full game is released.

Testing the full game

If you write to us to volunteer as a tester, with your platform, a link to your Steam profile and the other details the survey asks for, we use them only to choose testers and to write to you about testing. We delete them when testing is done. Testers must be 16 or older.

Where your emails are kept

Mail to [email protected] is forwarded by Cloudflare to our Gmail inbox, provided by Google. We answer from Gmail, so copies of conversations are kept there.

Some versions of the game give an older address, [email protected]. That is an Apple iCloud Mail inbox, so mail sent there is kept with Apple.

Legal basis

We handle bug reports and tester sign-ups to do what you asked us to (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR) and in our legitimate interest in fixing the game (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We handle survey answers in our legitimate interest in improving the game (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Who else is involved

Apple (iCloud Mail), Google (Gmail and Google Forms) and Cloudflare (email forwarding) process data for us as our service providers. They are based in the United States, take part in the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and use the European Commission's standard contractual clauses. Valve is responsible for its own processing in Steam, as described above.

Children

The game isn't directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from them.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the data we hold about you, and ask us to correct it, delete it or limit how we use it. You can also object to how we use it. Write to [email protected] and we'll reply within one month.

If you think we've handled your data wrongly, you can complain to the Information Commissioner of the Republic of Slovenia (Informacijski pooblaščenec) or to the data protection authority where you live.

Changes

If a future version adds anything that sends data, such as online features, we'll update this policy before that version is released.
